Welcome to The Lucas Letter™ webpage. This newsletter is primarily in response to the many requests that I have received from surveyors for additional information about the law and resources for finding the law. This newsletter is dedicated to that task.
The areas of the law that affect the practicing land surveyor the most as professional service providers are boundary law, easement law, water boundaries, torts (e.g., negligence), remedies, contracts, statutory law, and administrative law. Each of these areas, in turn, have many subcategories. Ten editions will focus on one aspect of the law by reviewing a case or cases (typically, appellate court opinions) to illustrate fundamental legal principles that affect the practice of land surveying. We also have two ethics editions each year, one in June and the other in December. I provide my commentary in the “Legal Angle” section of each edition.
Each Premium Edition comes with a 10-question test on the material in the newsletter that the subscriber returns to us for grading and awarding of continuing education credits to be applied towards license renewal. The newsletter is characterized as a “correspondence” course, as opposed to an “on-line” course, in that correspondence between the participant and the instructor is available. The Standard Edition is the same newsletter as the Premium Edition, minus the examination and awarding of continuing education credits.
All subscribers, Premium Edition and Standard Edition subscribers, are eligible to purchase our continuing education Correspondence Courses at a 40% discount, through Coupon Codes that we provide to our subscribers periodically throughout the year. This reduces our standard rate of $25.00 per hour for our courses to $15.00 per hour, a savings of $10.00 per hour over non-subscriber rates.

PREMIUM EDITION
Premium Subscriptions are $180.00 (U.S.) for one year of monthly issues (12 issues)
The typical Premium Edition Newsletter consists of a two-page letter with an attached case (appellate court opinion). The length of the attached case varies according to the length of the opinion. On average, the Newsletter consists of about 10-12 pages. Premium Edition subscribers download a 10-question examination on the material covered in the Newsletter and accompanying legal opinion (case). The examination consists of five true-false and five multiple choice questions. A score of 70 percent is required to pass the examination. On average, each monthly edition takes an hour and a half (1.5 hours) to complete, including the examination. Therefore, we award 1.5 hours of continuing education credit (1.5 contact hours), for each monthly edition.
Each monthly edition is made available to subscribers through a Newsletter Flyer (or Notice) that is delivered by e-mail. The Flyer/Notice contains a link to a hidden page on our secure website where the Newsletter, Test and an Evaluation form can be downloaded as Adobe .PDF (Portable Document Format) files. All premium subscribers are thereby afforded the opportunity to earn 18 contact hours of continuing education credits with their yearly subscription, by successfully completing the tests that accompany each edition.
